Golden Altar (Altar de Oro) at Iglesia San Jose Casco Viejo Panama City Panama
The massive gold altar of Iglesia San Jose. It survived the pirate Henry Morgan's sacking of Panama Viejo in 1671 when a priest is reputed to have painted it black and convinced Morgan that it had already been stolen. The altar was later moved to its present location in Iglesia San Jose. The altar itself is carved mahagony that is painted with gold. Iglesia San Jose is in the heart of the historic Casco Viejo district of Panama City and dates to 1673.
